Cheryl Flanagan
Secretary
Cheryl's love for animals began in the 1950s when she watched Westerns on TV. She saw how those magnificent animals have changed the lives of humans and civilizations for centuries, instilling in her a lifelong passion for their well-being.
Cheryl believes that all animals deserve to be honored and cared for, as we are their stewards. They should be kept free from pain, suffering, abuse, and neglect. Her experience as a 4H Leader for five years and a United States Pony Club JT/DC with Suncoast and Cohutta Highlanders for over 20 years exposed her to both the positive and negative aspects of horse ownership and responsibility.
Living near Tampa Bay Downs, Cheryl became aware of the horse slaughter disposal system for Thoroughbred horses that were no longer profitable. She built relationships with trainers who began sending her retired racers, leading her to take in her first rescue horse in 1979. Determined to prevent horses from falling into the slaughter pipeline, she founded the Horse Rescue, Relief, and Retirement Fund in 1998, saving countless horses over the years.
Cheryl is excited to bring her expertise in rescue efforts to Horse Tree Animal Rescue Farm, where she hopes to expand the organization's mission of saving animals in need. Her dedication and passion continue to drive her work, ensuring a brighter future for animals everywhere.
